The fourth season of the American television series 90210 was announced by The CW on April 26, 2011. It was later announced it would return to its original Tuesday 8:00 pm time slot, as a lead-in to new series, Ringer, and premiered on September 13, 2011. Trevor Donovan was dropped as a regular, as a result of ongoing changes by the new showrunners. He returned as a guest star in the fall to conclude his storyline. However, in late February 2012, it was reported that Donovan will return near the end of the season. The CW ordered two additional episodes for the season, which will total at 24.

Set 18 months after season 7, the story arc involves Jack Bauer contending with assassination threats made during a peace conference between President of the United States Allison Taylor and President Omar Hassan of the fictional Islamic Republic of Kamistan (IRK), a country similar to Iran. Kamistani terrorists, resentful of America and disappointed at Hassan's willingness to concede their attempts at developing nuclear weapons, turn against their country with the secret aid of the Russian mob, first attempting to assassinate Hassan and then to strike at America directly. Jack discovers the true masterminds behind the successful yet impromptu assassination of both president Hassan and Renee Walker are people working within the Russian government, and is willing to bring the culprits to justice at the cost of a third world war.
